Continuing Education Classes for Licensees


The Board has developed free continuing education classes for each license type. We hope every licensee that needs CE will use our free class toward their next renewal. (keep page 1 for your records, there is no test or quiz associated with this class)

Free Continuing Education Class for All Licensees - 4 hours

Free Continuing Education Class for Cosmetologists - 8 hours
Free Continuing Education Class for Manicurists - 8 hours
Free Continuing Education Class for Estheticians - 8 hours
Free Continuing Education Class for Natural Hair Care Specialists - 8 hours

Effective April 1, 2012:

  • Licensees can document CE hours as any education earned since the last renewal. Examples of acceptable CE hours would be: learning a new skill from another professional, watching educational videos or tutorials, taking correspondence or online courses, participating in a hands-on class. At least half the education completed must be in the cosmetic art field in which licensed. Please keep records of the time, date, location (or URL) and a brief description of the educational material so if selected for an audit and receive an audit letter such records will be able to uploaded the Board via our online portal at www.nccosmeticarts.com. 

  • Ensure at least 50% of subject matter broadens the knowledge of the cosmetic art profession (instructors – 50% teacher training techniques/and enhance the ability to communicate)
  • After completion of these requirements date and sign affirmation of course completion. All licensees may be subject to audit and must provide records of course title, description, date, address of location and number of hours earned if requested by the Board. (All Board audits will review actual course attendance hours. Licensees must complete a minimum of 8 hours of CE per year of licensure.)


Course providers no longer need submit course applications, packets, lesson plans, schedules or attendee information directly to the Board. Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact our office.

Each licensee must earn 8 hours of CE per year of the license cycle. 

CE Policies, Updates and Reminders

Exemptions: A licensee who is in active practice as a COSMETOLOGIST and has at least 20 years of consecutive years of experience as a cosmetologist can apply for an exemption from the continuing education requirement. 20 Years Work Experience Exemption Form

Individuals age 60 or older with 10 years of continuous work experience can apply for exemption from CE with the exception of teacher licenses.
