Individuals Licensed in another State

To transfer to North Carolina you must meet the following requirements:

Hold a current cosmetologist, esthetician, manicurist, natural hair care and/or teacher license in the United States.

Be in good standing with no disciplinary actions against your license. Be licensed in a state that offers reciprocity to North Carolina

The above list represents ALL of the necessary requirements to transfer a license to North Carolina. The hours you completed in school are not a factor in determining your eligibility for a North Carolina license.

If you meet the requirements, then read below for all the information on transferring your license.

1) Obtain a Certification
Contact the licensing agency through which you are currently licensed to request a letter of certification be mailed directly to:

If your licensing agency sends electronic certifications, request the certification be emailed to: certifications@nccosmeticarts.com

We do not accept online verifications or fax submissions. Certifications are held on file for either 90 days or until the date of expiration, whichever comes first.
2) Check the Status of your Certification

As long as the certification from your licensing agency includes your current mailing address, then a letter will be mailed upon receipt of the certification. You may also check to see if your certification has been received by scrolling to the list at the bottom of this page. If your name does not appear on the list, then your certification has not been received.
3) Submit the Application

Once your name appears on the LICENSE APPROVED list below, then you may complete the process for the North Carolina license by using either the Electronic Reciprocity Application by downloading and mailing in the Paper Reciprocity Application. A copy of your current cosmetologist, esthetician, manicurist, natural hair care and/or teachers license is required along with the application. If you submit the paper application, include the license copy in your mailing. If you submit the electronic application, fax a copy of your license to the attention of the Reciprocity Department at 919-733-4127.

Cosmetologist: $77
Esthetician: $45
Manicurist: $45
Natural Hair Care: $45
Teacher: $45

Effective 3/17/10, reciprocity licenses will not be granted for individuals holding either manicurist or esthetics licenses in the state of Florida.
