Board Policies

New Policies, Updates and Reminders

  • CE credits have been expanded to the internet and correspondence courses.  Cosmetologists will be permitted to earn up to 12 hours of internet CE hours per licensing cycle. Manicurists and estheticians will be permitted to earn up to 4 hours per licensing cycle. 


  • Footspa Sanitation: The Board has approved the use of EPA registered hospital grade disinfectants for use in the sanitation procedures for footspas.


  • When using FDA rated devices licensees must maintain specification sheets and the intended use statement for inspector review. If the devise is rated class 2 the licensee must provide the name, license number, and contact information for the supervising physician at the time of inspection.


  • CE course programs shall not be approved in: 1. segments of an hour and 2. less than two hours.


  • As proof of microdermabrasion equipment training, cosmetologist or esthetician equipment operators will be required to post in their workplace proof of previous microdermabrasion training (letter or certificate) from an approved cosmetic art school, equipment manufacturer, or from a Board approved microdermabrasion equipment training seminar.

  • CE courses will be valid for a two year period beginning January 1, 2008. All previously approved courses must be submitted for re-approval.

  • Board Inspectors must have access to all parts of the salon, including occupied treatment rooms during an inspection. Failure to allow inspection could result in civil penalty.


  • All international reciprocity candidates are required to pass both the written and practical exams prior to licensure, effective July 17, 2007.


  • The Board now offers opportunities for CE: Sign up to take the Board's 3 hour state law and sanitation course taught by Inspector Terri Johnson. The next course is scheduled for October 13, 2008 with sessions at both 9:00 and 1:00 at the Board's office 1201 Front Street Suite 110 Raleigh, NC 27609 and the cost is only $5.   • The Board now offers opportunities for CE: CE hours can be earned at the October 7, 2008 Board Meeting, a maximum of 2 hours of CE credit. Attendance is limited to 30 licensees, with guaranteed seating until the meeting begins at 9:00. Late entries will not receive credit.   • Licensees shall be exempt from 8 hours of continuing education requirements until the licensing period starting after their initial licensure.

  • The agency’s policy on duplicate licenses is to allow one duplicate per person per year/renewal cycle. If a second duplicate is requested, the licensee must submit proof of why the license is needed along with the notarized duplicate request form and fee.
